Who can wear Summer 2014 pencil skirts?

Can We Lesser Mortals wear a pencil skirt no matter what shape, age and size we are?

Pencil skirts are a big fashion statement for Spring Summer 2014. Older women (i.e. over 30!) are often stuck for fashion advice, worrying about whether they look like mutton dressed as lamb. Of course it is possible to be a stylish older woman (and I don’t mean you’ve got one foot in the grave) and pencil skirts are a current fashion trend as well as being a shape which has seen the test of time – think 40’s war images, 50’s screen sirens etc. Don’t worry what shape you are – pencil skirts flatter hourglass figures, boyish shapes, curvy ladies, pear shapes and top heavy women. I would only be wary if there is a huge difference in size between your top half and bottom half, of 2-3 sizes. e.g you buy a size 10 top and a size 16 bottom. Also be VERY careful with knitted jersey skirts (T-shirt fabric), as they will show every lump and bump, and also make pear shaped ladies even more pear shaped. Go for a good thick woven material. Here are some of my favourites.

karen millen pencil boyish skirt next pencil skirt pear shape

  1. Stretch Cotton pencil skirt. £99. Karen Millen. Cotton elastane. Dry clean. Sizes 6-16. Suits a boyish figure, as the peplum creates curves. See how the high waist shortens your torso though. Also hourglass figures suit this, as again the peplum accentuates your curves. Add a belt to remind people of your tiny waist.
  2. Stone Skirt. £35. Next. 100% tencel. sizes 6-22R. Suits a pear shape, as the contrast line in the middle draws attention towards the centre. Also, it needs to be worn with a coloured top, which draws attention upwards.

boden pencil skirt for top heavy boden flower oragnza skirt

I love these 2!!! How summery????

  1. Modern Pencil skirt. £59. Boden. Available in stripes, florals and denim. In regular, petite and tall lengths. Sizes 6-20. Cotton elastane mix, and machine washable. If this is pricey for you, there are ALWAYS offers on Boden. Suits a top heavy lady, as the pattern draws attention downwards, and the slightly lower waist, elongates a short body.
  2. Flower organza skirt. £99. Boden. Available sizes 6-22 and reg, petite and tall lengths. Cotton polyamide mix. Hand washable. also in bubblegum and navy colours. With a matching top, you get 3 looks if you buy the top too. Suits most shapes, but petites will gain the benefit of appearing to lengthen their body and looking taller.

reiss pencil skirt for tall women

  1. Bryant Straight midi skirt in gem. Reiss. £120. Viscose elastane. Dry clean only. sizes 6-16. This is a very modern length – midi, which would be quite daring on regular heights, ridiculous on petites and fantastic on tall  ladies!!

Can I wear a jumpsuit this summer?

Can We Lesser Mortals wear jumpsuits without looking like Andy Pandy or an 80’s throw back?

Lesser Mortals are probably thinking – Can I wear a jumpsuit at my age or is it too young? Is it practical if dragging a toddlers around? or even: With my pelvic floor, can I get to the loo quick enough? Jumpsuits have been around for the last 2-3 years, and I think they are highly wearable and comfy if you are a jegging type lady, and hate constrictive garments. I also think they are very stylish, as not many people have embraced them yet. I wear mine for special occasions, like weddings, as I like to be different, and you can guarantee everyone else will be in a dress. ( I shall be posting some images on my Facebook page if you want a laugh – Vicky Smith Styling) Anyway, here are some ideas for different shapes, sizes and budgets, as obviously with a jumpsuit, you haven’t got the flexibility to buy different size tops and bottoms (not least tall ladies don’t want to be cut in half, and petite ladies don’t want to trip over their trousers legs!!) I also prefer the jumpsuits that are the same pattern top and bottom, (for different patterns top and bottom, you could just buy separates). A belt is an essential accessory which can add quality to a cheaper jumpsuit.

  1.  Brittany jumpsuit. Phase Eight. £110. Sizes 8-18. Polyester elastane. Machine washable. Fastens with a zip at the back. This will suit pear shapes, as the drapey wide legs flow nicely from the hip. Hourglass figures and larger busted ladies may find this fits them, as the V neck and stretch fabric will allow room to expand and the V-neck will break up that area. (NB – Next stocks this jumpsuit too!) Lovely with a Chanel style jacket.
  2. Saskia Lace jumpsuit. Phase Eight. £110. Sizes 8-18. Mixture of fibres. Dry clean only. Again, the wide leg flatters larger hips, the 3/4 sleeves are for those who hate their upper arms, and the wrap over top suits a nice bust. The gentle gathering over the tummy area, may also forgive a less toned middle area, but if store fat over your tummy, the gathers may accentuate too much. Will suit hourglass figures too.
  3. Pink jumpsuit. Next. £55. 100% polyester. sizes 6-22 reg, and 6-18 petite and 8-18 tall. How lovely to see a jumpsuit that isn’t black !!(believe me, there are a lot of black ones out there!!) This has the advantage of being scaled to fit whatever height you are. If you are petite, wear heels and make sure the legs drape over your shoes, to give the illusion of extra height.  Definitely wear with a belt.

jumpsuit next bigbust jumpsuit next - nice decollatage jumpsuit mango - boyish

  1. Navy print jumpsuit. £28. Next. 100% viscose. Available in sizes 8-22 and petite and tall. This is a good jumpsuit or wearing with flat shoes as well as heels. It will suit top heavy ladies with long slim legs. The slightly dropped waist will lengthen your torso and again, use a belt.
  2. Printed wide leg jumpsuit. £35. Next.  Only available in regular sizes 6-22. Don’t be a shrinking violet. This eye catching jumpsuit allows you to cover up on the beach, or dress up a night time with heels. You probably need a generous chest to suit this, but it will also expand round the waist, and apple shapes may find a contrasting belt around the middle gives a waist where there isn’t one. Use a coloured pashmina at night time.
  3. Palm print jumpsuit. £39.99. Mango. Xs- XL. 100% viscose. Handwash. Another lovely summery print. Suits a boyish shape, as the straps don’t allow much bra support. Wear with a smart belt. To dress up, use a gold belt and high heels.  For evening, a white tuxedo jacket will really add style.

Have fun shopping!! Don’t forget to see how I wear mine on my Facebook page. Vicky Smith Stying.

How to wear bomber jackets

Can We Lesser Mortals Wear bomber jackets without looking like a Pink Lady?

http://writeonstyle.com/screen-style-grease/
http://writeonstyle.com/screen-style-grease/

Bomber jackets are very on trend this summer, but as a Lesser Mortal, you may be worried you can’t wear that look, and will get shouts of “hey Sandy” and “you’re the one that I want” everywhere you go. (which is fine, unless you happen to be passing a building site, when it can be quite intimidating). Well, there are plenty of variations on the High Street at affordable prices, and it’s quite easy to think of them a bit like a cardigan. Easy to throw on, but stylish straight away. They are usually cropped, and will draw attention to your waist line, so brilliant if you have a tiny waist. If you are more straight up and down, you could wear a fuller skirt or relaxed trousers, to give you more curves. Short legged ladies, can wear high waisted trousers or skirts with their bomber jacket, to make their legs look longer, and large chested ladies should be careful about zipping the jacket right the way up, otherwise your chest will look too large (leave it slightly undone to break up the chest area). If in doubt, Do Not Team With anything 50’s inspired. (unless you are going to a Rock and Roll fancy dress night).

  1. Lace knit bomber jacket. Karen Millen. £99. Polyester/elastane/viscose. Hand washable. Sizes 1-4.  This gives a great evening look, with its lace sleeves. It could also be worn with a leather pencil skirt, or other skirts for day time. I can’t see this item dating.
  2. Black bomber jacket. Next. £55. Comes in regular and petite sizes from 6 – 22. It has sheer sleeves – ideal if you like to hide your bingo wings but still look a little sexy!!
  3. Satin Jackets. H and M. £29.99. 100% polyester and machine washable. Sizes 8-20. Ideal to fling on over jeans during the day, or used as a light jacket for evening when on a hot holiday.

next floral bomber next sequin bomber mango reversible bomber

  1. Floral bomber jacket. Next. £32. £100 polyester. Size 6-22. This embraces the floral trend for this spring summer, and as you can see from the image, is as far away from a Pink Lady, as you can get. If Mary Berry can do it…..what’s your excuse?
  2. Sequin bomber jacket. £75. Next. Nylon elastane mix with a poly cotton lining. Sizes 6-22. As you can see, 3 of these styles are from Next, so it’s no wonder Next is overtaking the high street. This sequin look is fabulous for dinner dates, or going out. I have one a few years old, and it can make a scabby pair of jeans and vest top, look good enough to go out in. I don’t just wear it at Christmas either, and it looks great over an LBD.
  3. Paisley print reversible bomber jacket. £54.99. Mango. 100% Polyester. Machine washable. 2 jackets for the price of one!! Sizes S, M and L.

Please note – none of my suggestions have a number on, nor look like you play for an american baseball team. Remember your age…….

How to wear neon without looking like a belisha beacon

http://www.vogue.co.uk/fashion/spring-summer-2014/ready-to-wear/rochas/full-length-photos/gallery/1050079
http://www.vogue.co.uk/fashion/spring-summer-2014/ready-to-wear/rochas/full-length-photos/gallery/1050079

Can We Lesser Mortals wear this summers neon trend, without looking like a belisha beacon? It’s a hard look to master, and I would leave embracing it whole-heartedly, to the young and lithe. Firstly, it always looks fab on a lovely mediterranean tan (have I lost your attention already?). Secondly, how much attention do you wish to draw to yourself? and thirdly, do you want people asking you when the roadworks will be completed?? That being said, I am certainly going to embrace neon this summer, by using it as an accent colour.  If you are pale-skinned, it will work well to add strength to the pastel colours which are around this summer. And it just makes ordinary garments a little bit quirkier e.g. brogues with a neon shoe lace. The shops haven’t got lots in yet, but I would expect more as the weather gets more summery.

top shop neon tunic ted baker neon shift karen millen neon cardi

  1. Fluro flower tunic. Topshop. £38. 100%polyester. Machine washable. Sizes 4-16. This obviously hides a multitude of sins….The model is 5’10 so petites can expect it to be a little longer, and very tall ladies may find it only just covers your waist band. May be a good cover up on the beach too.
  2. Ramonda floral print tunic. Ted Baker. £149. 100% polyester and machine washable. Sizes 6-14 (16 out of stock) This dress has a beautiful contrast zip and pleated skirt bit at the back. If you are very straight up and down, it can be a bit “hippy” so may not be a good fit. The problem with this, will be in colder weather, as black opaques are not going to look great next to this pale colour. I would try wearing it over some jeggings or skinnies as a tunic, or failing that, slap loads of fake tan moisturiser (easier than fake tan at avoiding streaks but takes a few days to build up) and try a very fine 7 denier tight, a shade darker than your natural skin tone. The only opaque I think would work, would be a footless tight but be careful which colour- try www.mytights.com Pamela Mann have 50 denier cerise and damson coloured ones, which should look nice with this. Or Topshop have a pale pink rose lace tight, which would give this dress a vintage look with Mary Jane shoes. This look is a bit too “little girl” if you have kissed your 40’s good-bye.
  3. Knit cardigan with neon trim. Karen Millen. £99. Polyester viscose and hand washable. Sizes 6/8-16. This cheeky little cardigan has a sheer back to it, so is rather see-through! Fear not – nothing a little vest top won’t solve! Consequently, it gives you 2 looks for the price of one. Sheer for evening, or as a normal cardigan now, for day wear. (wear a shirt or T-shirt under for daywear so it looks less transparent) Not sure I’ll be doing the patch jean look (especially if my daughter is), but I think this will look great over a lace pencil skirt.

Accessories are alway easier to embrace trends with.

  1. Printed pastel scarf. Gap. £19.95. With neon highlights, it’s easy to accessorise with.
  2. Julo classic belt in bright pink. Ted Baker. £49. leather.

  1. Patent ballerina. Karen Millen. £85. Polyurethane. Sizes 36-41. Fab with skinny jeans or a full skirt.
  2. Bright 2 part high wedge sandals. Next. £38. Size 35-43. Man made. Perfect for smaller ladies, to give a bit of height, with the wedge making the heel height feel less extreme.

Can We Lesser Mortals wear florals without looking like Kew Gardens?

http://www.vogue.co.uk/fashion/spring-summer-2014/ready-to-wear/dolce-and-gabbana
http://www.vogue.co.uk/fashion/spring-summer-2014/ready-to-wear/dolce-and-gabbana

We all like a nice floral to put us in the Spring spirit, and this Spring/summer, the patterns are set to be loud and bold . But, can a Lesser Mortal wear them without looking like a right Charlie round your local Tesco? As always, the high street does some great variations, and if you are a shrinking violet (yes – a pun intended!) I suggest a more tonal pattern, perhaps in a pastel shade. But remember, it’s early days yet, and we always feel a bit brighter and bolder when the sun comes out.

coast floral dress phase eight 2 floral dress ted baker floral dress

  1. Riya dress. Coast. £90. Sizes 6-18. Polyester/elastane. dry clean. What you can’t see here, is the fabulous electric blue zip which runs the length of the back. It also has forgiving ruching over the belly area, so it isn’t body-con. Suits a curvier figure, as without hips, it is too flappy round the thighs. Also has forgiving 3/4 length sleeves.
  2. Lisette dress. Phase Eight £99. Sizes 6-20. Made of slinky jersey, this will flatter a larger bust because it has a V-neck, but it also gathers under the bust line, so it shows a slimmer midriff. With gathers and ruching around the waist, it also disguises a jelly-belly!! Machine washable. Less likely to crease for holidays and if you like matching accessories, this has shrugs, and bags to match.
  3. Cocoa – roses on canvas print dress. Ted Baker. £169. Size 6-14. 100% polyester and hand washable. Again, this prefers a curvy figure, as it has wider hip measurements. The fabric is not so stretchy, so the bust may be a little tight for some ladies.

These dresses are good investments, as the bold colours will be kind to pale English skin tones. And really…as a Lesser Mortal, did you suddenly think you were going to develop a mediterranean glow over the summer? If on a budget, you can always wait for the sales…..

wallis floral top zara floral jeans

  1. Navy blue floral top. Wallis. £33, now reduced to £31.35. Sizes 8-20. Running low on some sizes. Polyester and machine washable. A fab little top which hides a multitude of sins. Dress up or down. If you are buying a cheaper top, go for bold colours, as I always think paler polyester tops can look cheap.
  2. 5 pocket printed trousers in sky blue. Zara. £29.99. Cotton Elastane. Size 6-16. Machine washable. A comfy stretchy trouser in a more subtle floral. As the material on these are quite thin, you may want a longer length top or shirt with this. (unless you have rock hard abs, in which case you aren’t very mortal!!)

ted baker floral jacket river island floral jacket

  1. SAAMSA Electric daydream biker jacket. £179. Ted Baker. Polyester/elastane mix. Dry clean. Sizes 6-14. Don’t be put off by a bold jacket. For a start, you alway get compliments, as everyone else just has a dull plain one. But they are also much more stylish than a cardi!! Obviously, wear plainer T-shirts and jeans/trousers with it.
  2. Light pink daisy jacquard cropped jacket. £50. River Island. Size 6-18. Polyester and  metallic fibre. Dry Clean only. This is much more subtle if you are more wall flower than red hot poker! Again, ditch the cardi and look sharper with a throw-on jacket. This will also complement the pastel skirts coming through for the summer.
