Can We Lesser Mortals grab Sales Bargains we will wear again?

Happy New Year! Did you rush to the sales and snap up some sale items? I didn’t. Partly I’m recovering from the expense of the festivities and gift overload, but the other factor is that I find the paltry reductions straight after Christmas, not worth getting out of bed for. Now, however, things are beginning to hot up, and with February pay packet looming on the horizon, it’s a good time to trawl the online sale pages, or trot to the shops.

I was nearly palpitating at some of the savings you can get right now, from the more expensive High Street Stores. Some are resolutely hanging on to a maximum of 50% off, which on a leather jacket of £5-600 still costs a lot of money, but others are really trying to clear stock before launching their Spring range. And so there are some fabulous sale bargains to be had. I have picked out a few and couldn’t wait to tell you about them, as they are AMAZING!! If you click before tonight 24th January, Karen Millen is offering another 30% off.

What to buy?

First of all, you could tell yourself you’ll manage with the coat you’ve got, till next year. But trends don’t change that much, and you can bet your bottom dollar they will cost more next year. Consequently, on the run up to Christmas, with outgoings for presents, it will become less of a priority. Hence it’s good idea to buy more expensive winter items now, even moving towards the end of the season. Moreover, we will still have 3 months of cold weather. In addition, the other thing to look out for, are items you can wear in summer – pastel colours, new trends etc, and make your saving early. So to conclude, go on – have a look today. Most sizes were still available when I wrote this, but you’ll still need to be quick.

10 metallic fashions to pack a punch

Metallic images courtesy of Vivienne westwood Lanvin, Valentino and Saint Laurent

Can We Lesser Mortals wear a Metallic, without looking like we’ve just finished a marathon & are wrapped in a survival blanket?

Metallics are quite a scary trend aren’t they? They really draw attention to you, and oh boy, if you get it wrong……..SO – here is a little advice to help you work out whether you can carry off a metallic item of clothing, or whether you’re going to look like a Quality Street wrapper.

First of all – gold or silver? If you are freckly, red, auburn, chestnut headed, brown/green/hazel eyes, and generally warm toned – then gold is for you (this is a guide, not conclusive) If you are very pale skinned, have blue veins which show under your skin, have grey/blonde/black hair, grey/blue eyes – then silver is the colour for you. Also think about whether gold or silver jewellery suits you best, and use that as a guide.

If you have very strong features, and are dark skinned, or have bright eyes, then a bold shiny metallic is good for you, If however, your features disappear  without make up, and your hair and skin blur together, a flatter, toned down metallic will suit you better. Of course, you can avoid confusion and choose to wear the metallic item away from your face (i.e. trousers or skirt). If you choose to wear a metallic coat or jacket, then wear a coloured scarf that suits you.

If you are worried you’ll look daft – a metallic belt, handbag or shoes shows you know what’s in fashion, & can make you look younger. I would suggest that those older Lesser Mortals go less for the full on bling metallic anyway, and maybe accessorise with metallics as a way to express their inner fashionista!

Which outfit would you choose? Please let me know in the comments box, below.

  1. Kendal pleated silver dress. £89. Monsoon. Size 8-18. Hand washable. This dress has a V neck and fitted bodice, with a fluid pleated skirt, and will suit hourglass, and some pear shape or boyish shaped ladies.
  2. Pink metallic wrap slip dress. £32. River Island. Size 6-18. Polyester elastane mix. Machine washable. The bodice on this dress is much looser fitting, and therefore more forgiving. This will suit hourglass and some boyish and pear shapes.

  1. Gold plunge wrap dress. £38. River Island.  Size 6-18. Polyester elastane mix. Machine washable. Available in silver too. This ties at the waist, and the V neck makes it suitable for bigger busts and hourglass.
  2. Becca Batwing dress. £89. Phase Eight. Size 8-18. 9 other colours – viscose nylon mix, machine washable. A more casual style, this will suit boyish  shaped ladies.

  1. Metallic pyjama shirt. £46. Top Shop. Size 4-16. and petite and tall sizes. 100% polyester. Machine washable. This relaxed shirt with V neck will suit most body shapes,
  2. Pewter pleated skirt. £46. Next. Size 6-22. Polyester elastane mix. I think this is machine washable, but it doesn’t say on the web site. This skirt is quite a heavy weight, and has a solid waist band. It will suit hourglass, top heavy and boyish. It may also suit some pear shapes, as the pleats fall nicely from the hips downwards.

  1. Silver metallic super skinny jean. £24. Next. Size 6-22 , regular, long and extra long lengths. Cotton, polyester, elastane mix. Machine washable. These will suit top heavy and boyish best.
  2. Silver faux suede bomber jackets. Reduced to £30. River Island. size 8-18. 100% polyester. Machine washable. Running out of stock…!!! Bomber jackets can be worn just like a cardi, so will suit most body shapes.

  1. Flatform penny loafer. £70. Dune. Size 3-8. Leather upper. Not so in “in your face” so will suit everyone!
  2. Mayfair chrome heeled boots. £82. Top Shop  Size 2-9. Leather upper. These are perfect if you find metallics all a bit much.

So go on – give metallics a go. So many ladies are set in their ways, or dress prematurely older than their age, and no-one wants to look 10 years older than they actually are. So push the boat out and experiment If you’d like me to come and help, or have a Skype chat, then contact me through my website. here

Can We Lesser Mortals wear leopard prints without looking like we’ve been taxidermied?

The mercury is dropping, and Lesser Mortals everywhere are vacuum packing their Ibiza outfits away, dusting mothballs out of their cashmere blend knitwear and starting to plan their show stopping outfits for the next 6 months. So what will it be? A puffy meringue parka? Crusty old tweed twinsets? Rich, full of flavour velvets,  or are you going to sizzle sexiness in this season’s Leopard Prints?

Are leopard prints like marmite, or can they appeal to everyone? In terms of what personality you have – leopard prints can be translated into girly Mary Jane Shoes, urban ankle boots, floaty seventies gossamer maxi dresses, hard core T shirts and skinny jeans. If beige isn’t your colour, don’t wear it next to your face.  Choose shoes or bottoms, or go for another colour of leopard print, like those items shown below. It’s often regarded as a non colour, making it easy to blend with any other colour, from reds through to greens and blues. If you’re worried it isn’t age appropriate, remember to just give a little nod in the fashion direction, and stick to a belt, bag or shoes What’s good enough for the PM, is good enough for me!!

So go on……Roar don’t Growl – Keep it quality, and Keep it fake. We don’t need too many Bette Lynches out there.

  1. Grey Gemma wool coat. £249. Hobbs. Size 6-18. Wool polyester mix. Dry clean only. Most shapes can get away with this coat, but it will be more flattering on boyish and apple shapes.
  2. Animal print formal T shirt. £28. Oasis Size 6-16. 100% polyester. Machine washable. Best for pear shapes and  boyish shapes.

  1. Biba printed leopard jumper. £65. House of Fraser  Size XS to XL. Nylon, viscose cotton mix. machine washable. The V neck flatters bigger chested ladies and hourglass best.
  2. Leopard print wrap midi dress. £59. Top Shop. Size 4-16. 100% polyester. Machine washable. Available in tall, petite, and maternity sizes. The variety of dress fits on offer, means this dress suits most body shapes, but the low cut neck won’t complement flatter chester chested ladies.

  1. Ruffle animal long sleeve blouse. £34. TopShop Size 4-16. Also available in a black and white animal print and in petite sizes. Polyester and metallic mix. Machine washable. Best for boyish, pear shapes and flatter chests.
  2. Snow leopard flock skinny jean. £80. French connection. Size 6-16. Cotton polyester, elastane mix. Machine washable. Suitable for those who can normally wear skinny jeans.

  1. Animal print pleated skirt. £35. M and S . Size 6-18. 100% polyester. Dry clean only. Pleat midi skirts are EVERYWHERE this autumn. This style suits boyish, hourglass and large chested women.
  2. Leopard pony belt. £22. Top Shop.  Size XS-L 100% leather. If leopard is too much for you….use this belt to just add a hint of pattern on your jeans, trousers, skirts, or over a jumper, to show you are on trend.

  1. Graduate slingback shoe. £56. Top Shop. I love that fact these shoes have an “on trend” cuban heel, are leopard print and have a slingback. Fantastic with bare legs or opaque tights, and with skinny jeans and wide leg trousers.
  2. Snow leopard drawstring bag. £199. Boden. Printed cowhide. This gorgeous bag will add a bit of style to a work outfit that needs to be demure and plain. And it’ll instantly make your jeans and overcoat look more eye catching.

So I hope these leopard print designs have inspired you to take a risk and try some on. Animal print is a classic design, which goes in and out of fashion, but will always be around long term. If you have to wear a uniform or strict dress code, then a bag or shoes can be a great way to express your inner tiger mum!!

Can We Lesser Mortals wear metallics and still get through airport security?

Is it just me, or are fashions not moving on very much? I think this is the third time I have written about metallics, which just goes to show, if you listen to my advice, you’ll get quite a lot of wear from you purchases. The other thing is HOW EXPENSIVE are clothes at the moment? I hate buying cheap tat, but some of the High Street Shops are seriously expensive at the moment. Anyway, I hope I can steer you towards some wearable metallic clothes, at reasonable prices, without you looking like Jennifer Beals in her shiny Pineapple track pants break dancing in Flashdance (ok if you are too young to remember, think sweaty shiny plastic trousers) Can you wear metallics whatever your age? Well, if you look at Prada (photo above) they stick to stripes of silver in the material, without going the whole “metallic” hog. The M and S skirt below just uses threads of metallic without going  “bacofoil”. Stick to silver if you have blue tones to your skin, and stick to golds, if you have a warmer skin tone. I have shown on my “3 ways to wear” tab, how to wear a metallic T shirt. Click here to see. Or to see a metallic skirt, click here.

As for me…..I love the silver slip dress, which is ticking a lot of boxes this summer. I have already worn my silver converses to death (you should have taken my advice….!!! Don’t you hate a smarty pants??)

metallics SS16 oasis dressmetallic SS16 tunic Zara

  1. Plisse midi slip dress. £65. Oasis. Size XS-L. 100% polyester. Machine washable. Slip dresses are all the rage this summer and are great for summer holidays to show off a tan. This one has a tie belt, so although best for boyish, hourglass can get away with, provided not too big busted.
  2. Long pleated tunic. £25.99. Zara. Size S-L 100% polyester. Machine washable. This is half white and half silver, so not too overpowering. It is versatile enough to be good for evenings and beach wear!! Best for boyish and apple shapes.

metallic SS16 Oasis T shirtmetallic SS16 T shirt reiss

  1. Wrap back wrinkle T shirt. £30. Oasis. Size XS-L. 100% polyester, machine washable. It has interesting back detail, but is also quite shapeless. Therefore is best for boyish, and pear, although other shapes can get away with.
  2. Maison pewter knitted metallic top. £60. Reiss. Size XS-L. Viscose, metallic, elastane mix. Hand washable. With a loose fit and batwing style sleeves, this will suit boyish and pear shapes best.

metallic ss16 M and S skirtmetallic SS16 m and S cardi

  1. Metallic zigzag skirt. £49.50. The limited collection. M and S. Size 6-18. Polyester, polyamide, metallic mix. Machine washable. When you look at the photo, is it any wonder M and S is doing badly? Totally uninspiring image, but it is actually a nice skirt, building on the retro & midi length trend. Perfect for 50’s starlets!! This shape can be worn with heels or flats. Best for hourglass, top heavy, pear shapes and boyish. With all the pleats at the middle, apple shapes need to avoid!!
  2. Slim fit metallic effect cardi. £35. M and S. Size 6-18. Size 6-18. Viscose, polyamide, polyester and metallised fibres. Machine washable, Again, not very inspiring photo, but this versatile cardi will be great for summer, under jackets, or as an extra layer at night time. Best for pear, boyish, and hourglass.

metallic SS16 jigsaw trainersmetallic ss16 Boden bag

  1. Ayda leather trainers. £98. Jigsaw. Size 36-41. Calf leather and rubber.  These can be worn with skirts, or jeans, and will suit anyone.
  2. Fearne slouchy metallic suede bag. £139. Boden. metallic finished suede. Suits anyone.

Hoping then, that these ideas will inspire you to try something a little different this summer. If you want more help or advice, contact me in the comments sections, or through my website, Vicky Smith Styling.

8 nautical styles you can’t do without this Spring!

Can We Lesser Mortals wear nautical styles with looking like we should be swabbing the decks?

Ahoy there me hearties!! And shiver me timbers. Welcome to fashion trends 2016, and our first look at what you can get on the High Street currently. Most stores still have about 50% sale stock. New stock is coming into store, but it is a bit mixed and sadly, a bit deja vue. However, one look which is classic, timeless and stylish, is the one embracing nautical styles. You are best not to do the whole nautical  thing, or you will look like you’re on shore leave, but there’s nothing wrong with a nice stripe jumper, sharp cut navy skirt or wide leg trousers. These nautical styles are appropriate to most ages and body shapes, and you can wear them with any primary colour, for a bit of extra “oomph”.

Enjoy, and let me know which is your favourite. I love the Navy skirt.

Nautical 2015 stripe cardinautical 2015 oasis jumper

  1. Fine knit cardigan. £14.99. H and M. size XS/S and M/L. Very long so no good if you are short! Acrylic viscose mix and machine washable. Great for tall ladies, top heavy and apple shapes.
  2. Nautical stripe knit. £38. Oasis. Size XS to L. Cotton elastane mix. Machine washable. With small gold buttons and clever navy side panels, this jumper shaves an inch or two off your sides. Avoid horizontal stripes if you are big busted, so this suits pear shapes and boyish best.

nautical 2015 zara crop blousenautical 2015 KM tshirt

  1. Blouse with frilled hem. £25.99. Zara. Size XS-L. 100% viscose, hand washable. Whilst the stripe broadens the you on top, the frill adds too much volume around your waist, so probably best for boyish. If you are very tall, you may get away with wearing it, even if you are pear shaped. (the frill will then sit higher than your waist line)
  2. Striped sleeveless top £50. Karen Millen. Size 6-16. 100% cotton. Machine washable. The high neck and stripe is better for flatter chests, so best for pear shapes and boyish figures.

nautical 2015 KM skirtnautical 2015 trouser oasis

  1. Button A line Skirt £125. Karen Millen. Size 6-16. Cotton elastane mix, dry clean only. Although described as A line, this looked quite straight to me. Will suit top heavy, boyish and if it sits high on your waist, will suit hourglass ladies too.
  2. Sailor button trousers. £45. Oasis.  Size 6-18. Polyester, viscose elastane mix. Machine washable. Maybe avoid a stripe top with these, or you will look like a sailor! Classic wide leg trouser, but these buttons are going to draw attention to your tummy. So best for pear shape, hour glass, boyish and top heavy – but only if your tummy isn’t too rounded. The high waist can disguise a small muffin top!

nautical 2015 boden dressnautical 2015 next dress

  1. Maggie Ottoman dress. £89.50 Boden. Size 6-22 in petite, reg and long length. Polyester cotton elastane mix. Machine washable. This is black and white, but it is also available in blue stripe, plain navy and plain black. This fit and flare style will suit pear shapes, hour glass and boyish.
  2. Navy sporty tipped tunic. £38. Next. Size 6-22, petite, reg and tall lengths. Polyester elastane mix, machine washable. This tunic is stylish, but also easy to throw on quickly. You could wear with a blazer for work, bare legs and flat pumps, or even over skinny jeans (go for a petite size if you want a shorter length). Will suit most shapes, but best for boyish and apple shapes.

So anchors away, and embrace the nautical styles in the shops. If you need help deciding your shape or sorting your wardrobe, you can book a one to one with me at
