9 top ideas for wearing metallics this Summer 2105

Can We Lesser Mortals manage to wear metallics, without looking like a Barbarella throw back?

I seem to remember giving “fashion advice” that metallics were going to be in fashion, and wondering whether Lesser Mortals could wear them without looking like Christmas turkeys. Well if you did invest, good for you, because metallics are still a fashion statement this Spring Summer. I know a lot of you are wondering whether you can get away with it at “your age”. I think that as you get older, you will  look younger if you keep following the trends. But whilst young twenty somethings can wear the whole look from head to toe, and look amazing, as you get older, you should wear less and less, until your twilight years when it might only be an accessory or trim that keeps you up to date. So this is a brilliant time to pick up accessories which will instantly update a pair of jeans and a white T shirt, and make you look like you are bang on trend. You’re not telling me you haven’t got a pair of converses or pumps in your wardrobe? And if you nip to the pub of an evening, why not have a metallic clutch or purse?

  2. Maida Vale bag.£140. Boden. Available in other colours – navy, turquoise, orange and brown. Will smarten up a pair of casual skinnies and a T-shirt, as well as having room for all your bits and bobs. 100% leather
  3. Sophie wedge Sandals. £79-£89. Boden. Perfect if you want a bit of extra height, but don’t like heels or like to walk for miles. On holidays, I always come a cropper on those authentic rural cobbles…so these should sort that problem!! Size 36-42. In gold, navy suede and patterned. All leather.
  4. All star dainty metallic Ox Converses. £47. Schuh. Leather upper with moc croc effect. Sizes 3-8. Will work with leggings, jeans and skirts. You could wear with a really pretty floaty dress too.
  5. Henrietta pumps. £150. French Sole from Next. Leather upper. You  don’t have to spend this much on pumps, but cheap ones only tend to last a season at most, and you run the risk of them smelling. Sizes 3-8. Next does other cheaper metallic styles too.

  1. Metallic layer T shirt £20. Next. Available in pewter and silver. Size 6-22. Outer is 100 % polyester over a viscose elastane vest top underneath. Again, an easy piece for slinging on with jeans, or smartening up with tuxedo style trousers and a smart jacket.
  2. 1971 Fava metallic shirt dress. £169. Reiss. Sizes 4-16. 100% polyester. Dry clean only. This will be best for boyish figures.

Hopefully some of these have tempted you. The accessories are so stylish and easy to wear, and the metallic tops are virtually non creasing. For a smart look, wear with heels, but equally, if you wear the jeans with casual boots/sandals or trainers, then the T shirts stay looking casual. Is pink a good colour to wear this spring?

Can We Lesser Mortals, whatever our age, wear pink without looking like Barbie?

Pink is hardly a top fashion colour, as some men and women like to wear pink all the time, irrelevant of season or fashion. And why, because it’s Valentines Day soon, do we have to wear red or pink…???Still, if it suit you, why not? Even as an “image consultant” I do like a nice bit of pink, and it doesn’t have to be girly girly, nor does it have to make you look like you are 8 years old. You can buy leather and suede in pink, and if you accessorise with edgier pieces you can get a more urban, androgynous look. If you like being a retro chick, then candy pastel pink is your 60’s “go to” pink. Imagine the bag pictured below with a sharp work suit, and I don’t think you would say it was girly. Maybe it’s just a highlight with your jeans – Scarf? Belt? And don’t just dismiss pink out of hand…there are so many shades from bubblegum pink to pale candy pinks – one of them will work for you. You can get your”colour analysis” done if you are unsure, and this will help you work out which shade suits you best. Below are some high street versions I’ve seen in the shops this week. Let me know your favourite.

pink coat m and s 2 pink shoes boden

  1. Button safe Dolly overcoat. £59. Marks and Spencers: Sizes 8-22. Polyester viscose elastane mix. Dry clean only. M and S actually do 4 pink coats, all of which are different shades of pink, and one is a petite size range. All look to be a straight fit, but this one actually flares slightly over the hips, so will fit slight pear shapes as well as boyish shapes.
  2. Millie sling back. £99. Boden. Half sizes available from 36-42. They have some great reviews, and are available in blue, green, pewter, pale pink and black. The heel size means these are easy to walk in and I can see these working in a formal office environment with a dark suit, as well as with a sixties pencil skirt, fifties flared skirt or modern skinny jeans.

Pink lk bennet Jenna Bucket Bag pink jean karen millen

  1. Jenna bucket bag. £450. LK Bennet. Available in power pink as well as white, turquoise and navy. If you find wearing pink clothes too much, what’s not to love about this bag? As mentioned above, it’ll look great with suits or casually.
  2. Subtle floral skinny jean: £90. Karen Millen. Sizes 6-16. Elastane, polyester cotton mix. Pale jeans are always in, in summer, so either totally 60’s these up with other candy colours, or make modern with converses and deeper shades. You can even glam them up with a leather jacket. Will suit boyish or top heavy ladies with slim legs.

pink dress phase eightpink ph 8 top

  1. Avalina fit and flare dress. £179. Phase Eight. Size 6-20. 100% nylon and machine washable. It is quite high waisted, so some ladies with tummies may find this suits them. It will be best on pear shapes, but hourglass and boyish may find it suits them too.
  2. Therese split back blouse. £69. Phase Eight. Silk overlay with viscose elastane lining.Hand washable. Size 8-18. A more delicate shade of pink this time. Suits boyish best, but other shapes can get away with if brighter bottoms, or worn with a necklace.

Hopefully this has made you re-think pink. I’d love to know which you like best. If you are in the midlands and want to book a one to one, then contact me through Facebook or my website www.vickysmithstyling.co.uk

What is this “dark fairytale” fashion trend?

Can We Lesser Mortals embrace the fairy tale trend without looking like The evil witch?

The trouble with all these fashion trends, is that Lesser Mortals can start to look ridiculous if you follow them to the letter. I should imagine you’d be sick of people shouting “Oi, Little Red Riding Hood”, if you were to go shopping in a red cape. It is, however, a very wearable trend this autumn, and most of us should be able to find something floral, embellished or darkly romantic to suit us. It is a lovely feminine fashion, and if you are beginning to get older and worry you can’t rock the younger androgynous look, it is ideal. Don’t leave these items for night time – the floral dress and skirt shown  below, can be worn with a jumper and flat boots to tone them down for a saturday shopping trip. The embroidered kimono can be worn with ripped jeans and Timberland type boots. Obviously the knitwear pieces are pretty versatile for day and night, and can be worn either with skirts or trousers. Don’t be scared of fuller skirts – they can hide a multitude of sins under them, but you should avoid if you are an apple shape. Let me know what you think of this trend in the comments box.

fairy tale monsoon dress fairy dress hobbs

  1. Lorena Lace dress. £89. Monsoon. Sizes 6-22. Dry clean only. Finishing just above knee height, and with lace sleeves to either hide upper arms, or add a little extra warmth, this dress will suit most age groups, and won’t drown petite ladies either. Suits pear and boyish shapes best.
  2. Invitation Guildhall dress. £189. Hobbs. Sizes 8-18. Viscose rayon, silk mix. Dry clean only. It finishes flatteringly at knee level, so if you have heavy legs, this is the right style for you. The flowing skirt will skim over bigger hips, and the narrow waist highlights your curves. It won’t suit you if you are too busty. Suits boyish, pear and smaller chested hourglass ladies.

  1. Marianna embellished funnel neck jumper. £69. Monsoon. Sizes 8-18 but sizes 20 & 22 out of stock on line. Viscose, polyamide, wool, alpaca. Machine washable. Will suit most body shoes, but would particularly flatter pear shapes.
  2. NW3 Evelyn sweater. £69. Hobbs. Sizes XS-L (6-16). Cotton, lyocell, wool mix. Hand washable. This slim fitting jumper would suit pear and boyish shapes best.

  1. Embroidered velvet kimono. £68. Top Shop. Sizes 4-16. Machine washable. 100% polyester. These kimono jackets are really easy to wear whatever your size and shape. Your arms and hips are covered, and you can dress up or down, day or night. Suits any body shape, but will flatter apple shapes and larger busted ladies.
  2. Genna blooms of enchantment skirt. £179. Ted Baker. Sizes 6-16. Outer is 100% silk. Dry clean only. The contrast coloured waistband and full skirt are screaming out for 50’s hourglass shapes to wear. Wear formally at night, or rock it up with a leather jacket, black ankle boots, and opaque tights.
  3. Steph floral Sequin jumper. £79. Phase Eight. Sizes XS-L. Viscose nylon. Hand washable. Comes to hip level on 5’10 model. A good evening wear piece for wearing with smart skinnies, or a pencil skirt. Covers upper arms, and would suit boyish figures and apples shapes.

  1. Jewelled pump. £129. Boden. Available in half sizes from 36 to 42. These are suede with leather liner and sole. If you don’t like heels, these are your “must” for Christmas parties. Available in god, navy and black. May make your feet look longer, so good for wide feet, less good if you already have overly long feet already.
  2. Morocco suede embellished bag. £59. Monsoon. Suede outer. 20cm x 30cm. Popper fastening.

It’s nice to see a fashion that flatters normal body shapes, and is more feminine, which I think suit more mature women. Let me know what you think, or if you fancy a session with me, Vicky Smith Styling, you can ask for vouchers for Christmas too!!

Are checks in fashion this Autumn?

Can I wear dogtooth and houndstooth without looking like a chessboard?

There is a big fashion direction this year towards retro 60’s and checks, so this is where dogtooth and houndstooth fit in. There doesn’t seem to be any difference between them, but smaller check versions are apparently called puppy tooth! You can see from the above photo, there is a fine line between wearing too much…and getting it right. My fashion advice would be to wear less or more subtle versions as you get older, and leave the “full on” trend to the youngsters! Obviously, as a style consultant too, you need to look at what you wear it with, as well as your body shape! It is a trend though, that is quite classic and sophisticated, so if you prefer timeless pieces, this trend will be for you.

Here are some high street ideas, which I think are very wearable.
