Can We Lesser Mortals grab Sales Bargains we will wear again?

Happy New Year! Did you rush to the sales and snap up some sale items? I didn’t. Partly I’m recovering from the expense of the festivities and gift overload, but the other factor is that I find the paltry reductions straight after Christmas, not worth getting out of bed for. Now, however, things are beginning to hot up, and with February pay packet looming on the horizon, it’s a good time to trawl the online sale pages, or trot to the shops.

I was nearly palpitating at some of the savings you can get right now, from the more expensive High Street Stores. Some are resolutely hanging on to a maximum of 50% off, which on a leather jacket of £5-600 still costs a lot of money, but others are really trying to clear stock before launching their Spring range. And so there are some fabulous sale bargains to be had. I have picked out a few and couldn’t wait to tell you about them, as they are AMAZING!! If you click before tonight 24th January, Karen Millen is offering another 30% off.

What to buy?

First of all, you could tell yourself you’ll manage with the coat you’ve got, till next year. But trends don’t change that much, and you can bet your bottom dollar they will cost more next year. Consequently, on the run up to Christmas, with outgoings for presents, it will become less of a priority. Hence it’s good idea to buy more expensive winter items now, even moving towards the end of the season. Moreover, we will still have 3 months of cold weather. In addition, the other thing to look out for, are items you can wear in summer – pastel colours, new trends etc, and make your saving early. So to conclude, go on – have a look today. Most sizes were still available when I wrote this, but you’ll still need to be quick.

An essential Sneak Peek at Autumn’s Fashions

Images from Bottega Veneta, D and G, Gucci, and Prada

Can We Lesser Mortals save money this Winter, by early buying Autumn’s Fashions?

How the heck are you? It’s been a long time since I tipped you off about the trends on the High Street, and it’s been a short summer in terms of sun and heat. I don’t feel I got my wear out of my high summer clothes, so I’m trying desperately hard to keep wearing them till at least the end of September, avoiding buying this autumn’s fashions just yet. Remember, you can keep warm by layering up – put shirts/T shirts etc on under dresses, and wear sandals with maxi’s and crop trousers to keep your legs a bit warmer.

If, however, you are totally bored with your summer clothes and can’t wait to go shopping, then here’s a quick heads up for what autumn fashions are to come. It’s by no means comprehensive, and High Street stores can sometimes ignore the catwalks, and carry on old styles from the season before, especially if they were best sellers. But at least, with this advice, you can be sure you’ll be fairly “edgy” for the next 6 months. Make sure you subscribe on the tab, to get my 2 weekly advice on what’s in the High Street shops to suit your figure!

All my resolutions to save money are flying out of the window…….

  1. Richmond Velvet jean.  £89. Whistles. Available in graphite, black and petrol. Size 24-32 (roughly 6-14). Machine washable. A stretchy jean in cotton elastane mix, cut in a 5 pocket jeans style. This jean is an easy style to wear, but still shows you know what’s in fashion. Suits boyish, slight pear, top heavy and hourglass ladies.
  2. Jagga Velvet shoe £46 Top Shop. size 3-9. 100% textile. Heel 3″. Colour teal. Velvet too much for you on top? Make a statement with these funky shoes. Will really brighten up a black evening ensemble. Avoid if you have chunky ankles.

  1. Harry jacquard ankle boot. £65. Top Shop Size 2-9. Heel 3.5″. Textile upper. Again, if you prefer to wear plain clothes or skinny jeans, why not add some funky ankle boots? These won’t suit you if you have very thick ankles.
  2. Geo jacquard cigarette trouser £35. Next. Sizes 6-22 in reg, long and extra long lengths. 100% polyester. These can be dressed up for work or evening wear, but why not wear during the day too, with a chunky knit and trainers or converses? Comments on the website suggest these are better on curvier women if you don’t want a saggy (not soggy) bottom!!

  1. Military knit coat. £99.99. Zara. Size S-L. Knitted long length coat. A striking lighter weight coat for winter. Perfect for hippy ladies who want to broaden their shoulders so will suit more proportionate pear shapes, and tall boyish shape ladies best. This coat is intended to reach to your ankles, and will look amazing with high heeled knee boots or over skinny jeans.
  2. Pleated cord skirt. £38. Oasis. Size 6-16. 100% cotton, machine washable. Short flippy skirt which will suit most body shapes, but not apple shapes.

  1. Leopard dress wrap dress. £99. Biba at H of Fraser. size 6-16. 100% polyester. Machine washable. Wrap dresses suit most body shapes and the V neck and wide sleeves are flattering whatever your age. Fantastic with knee boots in winter. Suit pear shape, hourglass, top heavy and boyish. Probably not apple shapes due to rigid waist.
  2. Pony zip clutch. £32 Top Shop. Faux fur and leather purse. Great for day or night.

  1. Check wool blend coat £99.99. Mango. Size XS-XL. wool blend mix, dry clean only. This coat is quite chunky and boxy, so although most shapes can wear it, it will complement boyish and some apple shapes best.
  2. Check suit trouser. £49.99. Mango. Size 8-14. Polyester viscose elastane mix. Machine washable. Perfect for work or with a chunky jumper at weekends. Will suit boyish, hourglass and busty women best.

  1. Endo Baffle Quilt coat. £249. Barbour at H of Fraser. Size 8-18. Polyester amide mix. Machine washable. Stylish and warm, this will suit pear shapes, boyish and hourglass best.
  2. Junni faux fur collar jacket. £199. Ted Baker. Size 6-16. Nylon shell, faux fur collar (detachable) and down filled. Dry clean only. This style is best for hourglass and boyish.

  1. Sheer spot pussy bow blouse. £99. Karen Millen. Sizes 6-16. Available in red too. 100% polyester, machine washable. Don’t you just love a pussy bow? The bow draws attention upwards, so great for pear shapes, boyish, apple, and hourglass.
  2. Aubergine long sleeve friledl blouse. £19.99. Zara. 100% polyester. Machine washable. Size S-L. Before you freak out that this is see through, I just want to mention you should wear a vest top underneath (so no unsightly flesh on show) If you are very self conscious, then a long sleeve tight T shirt would do the trick too.. This cunning little blouse, has a discreet V in to break up the chest area, so is great for apple shapes and big busts. The muted sleeves, draw eyes away from chest area.

So did this titillate you and get you wishing the weather was colder, providing a perfect excuse to go shopping? I’ll keep you up to date with new styles coming in, and where to get them, as this quick peek is by no means comprehensive.

Can We Lesser Mortals wear 70’s fashions without looking like an “extra” in a Charlie’s Angels episode.

Have you noticed how much denim and suede there is in the shops at the moment? It was inevitable that flares were going to come back in to fashion after skinnies have been around for years. During that time we have all aged….. and are now worrying people won’t realise we are bang on trend, rather than showing off that we can still squeeze into jeans we last wore when we were 18!! (Congratulations if you can!!) But of course, as a “personal stylist” I’m not going to influence you to wear extreme fashions if they don’t suit you. After all, these 70’s trends are responsible for lower hem lines, which is great for those Lesser Mortals who have varicose veins!!! I’ll show you various ways to exploit the trends without looking OTT, and as always, if you can find time to drop a little comment to me, or persuade any of your friends to follow my blog – fabby dabby ( or has that just shown my age….)

  1. Francisco tan high sandal. £45. Miss Selfridge. Size 3-8. 100% polyurethane. A very traditional 70’s style sandal, with stacked sole. Team it with a denim skirt.

So you can see how there are more on trend pieces for younger Lesser Mortals, and more classic pieces with a nod to the trend for slightly more conservative mortals!! What do you think of them? You can book me for one to one sessions as a “personal shopper” by clicking here

5 ways for women to wear tweed in Spring 2015

Can We Lesser Mortals wear tweed this spring, and look trendy not frumpy?

At this time of year, it’s hard to work out what’s going to be “in fashion” in the spring, as all the shops seem to have different things on display. My experience in retail head offices has shown me it’s fine balancing act between getting rid of old sale stock (but  the shops may look old and tired), and bringing in the high summer stuff, which is exciting but stops the sale stuff selling!! A good compromise though, is the Chanel/”Jackie O” style tweeds, which are warm, more brightly coloured, and new. Not all the shops have chosen to embrace this look, sticking to black (yawn) or going too summery, which is exciting, but no-one is buying yet. These will give you a good 3-4 months of wear, and will allow you to stretch summer/autumn at the end of September, without having to bring out your grey/black/navy jumpers. They don’t have to make you look like an old lady. See what you think. Let me know if you’d buy any?

twedd Zara cardi coat tweed marks and spencers coat

  1. Multicoloured coat. £69.99. Zara. Sizes XS-Xl. cotton acrylic mix. Not many available online, but I suspect they are awaiting deliveries. It’s too early for them to have sold out yet. Lovely and bright, and could be belted in as well as worn loose. Best on tall, busty or apple shaped ladies.
  2. Italian fabric textured coat. £89. Marks and Spencers. sizes 8-16. Cotton, polyester, acrylic, and viscose. Dry clean only. A lighter weight tweed type coat in classic cut and design. Can’t imagine this dating, and it’s very eye catching. Would suit boyish and apple shapes best.

tweed warehouse top twees karen millen dress

  1. Boucle bell sleeved top. £25. Warehouse. Sizes 6-18. 100% acrylic. Machine washable. Covers the top of your arms if you are self conscious. Would suit pear shape, boyish and possibly hour glass too.
  2. Neon tweed dress. £160. Karen Millen. Sizes 6-16. Polyamide, polyester, cotton mix. Dry clean only. This nips in nicely at the waist and has an A-line skirt, so will suit pear shapes and some boyish figures. I think it will be quite tight at the bust for an hourglass figure.

tweed marks and spences tweed outfit

  1. Open front zipped jacket £59 Tweed textured mini skirt £35. Marks and Spencers. Sizes 8-22. Cotton polyester acrylic mix. The jacket has no fastenings. This is a light weight suit, which can be worn as separates. It comes in 2 lengths, 18 and 21″.  This will suit boyish, slight pear shapes and as the waist band sits on the waist, may suit hourglass too.

Hopefully this has inspired you to cast off your winter blues, and nip into the shops for a bit of retail therapy. Tweed doesn’t have to be Miss Marple-esque. Don’t forget you can book me for personal styling sessions to help you understand your own body shape.

What are the new fashion trends for Autumn 2014

How can We Lesser Mortals look “on trend” in September whilst suffering from post Pina Colada poverty!!!

Welcome back Lesser Mortals. Kids at school? Post A-levellers waved off on their Gap Year? Students nearly ready to head back to uni? Holiday clothes washed and flat packed till next year?

Is the colder weather starting to make you wonder what to wear, as hawaiian prints are a little too “high summer”, tans are starting to fade, and you still haven’t got your head round buying new winter clothes, not least because you overspent whilst you were in Ayia Napa and your kids have bled you dry all summer. Fear not. Whilst the new trends are looking fresh and exciting, some have already appeared in previous seasons, and you’ll be able to dig them out again, whilst still looking up to date! Some of the trends are florals, animal prints, bomber jackets and checks/tartans. Loyal Mortals, will already have taken my fashion advice and purchased in previous months, but in case you didn’t heed my words, here are some items available to buy now. See…’s worth using a style consultant!
